A lot happens in cycling and this season is a perfect example of how quickly fortunes can fluctuate. By Day 32 of Season 66 Canard had already amassed 8 results and 3 victories, a figure that exceeded the total results from previous seasons. Therefore, Juan Yetaes would be forgiven for hoping for a record breaking season. However, the middle part of the season has been tricky with just handful of top 10s to celebrate. The cause of this dearth of results has not yet been reviewed but the disruption caused by the acquisition of new talent and the departure of previous leaders has obviously been a distraction for the Columbian team.
But as the Season enters its final phase, Canard will be hoping to reverse their fortunes with a fruitful final fortnight.
There are three storylines to follow:
1. Stage hunting at the inaugural Ukrainian Tour
After a disappointing Kangaroo Tour from newbie Rafiki Jean de Dieu Sharangabo, the Canard outift will be shifting it’s focus from GC to the sprint stages and Sprint Classification at the inaugural Karpaty Tyr in Ukraine. This time Rafiki will act as a domestique as Jairo Nez will lead the team. The technical sprinter will be eyeing up the parcours of Stage 1 between Oezjhorod and Solotvyno and the final Stage 7 from Sambir to Lviv which are both incredibly technical routes. Good results on these days will hopefully be enough to position him in the Top 3 Sprinters on the final day.
Johannes Kunuk is an outside change on Stage 2 with the combination of climbs and valley roads lending itself to his unusual skillset.
2. Canard’s cobbles focus continues to bear fruit
Fausto Aguero secured his third win of the season in Macau at the Confronto no Largo do Senado. It was his first win in Season 3 and came at a crucial time for the Columbians following a 33 day gap between the last team result at the Edmonton Red Deer Tour.
It also indicates a welcome return of form as Canard’s cobbles specialists head to the tough cobblestone paves of the Volta da Lagoa dos Patos. The team will be eyeing up a place in the General Classification and with Fausto also eligible for the Youth jersey the team will be optimistic that the trip to Brazil can provide rich pickings.
3. Canard’s TT specialist
Finally, Canard’s TT specialist Mancho Verme is one to watch. Mancho has increased his speed in the TT following a weeklong trip to Vlaanderen Physics in Antwerpen, Belgium to hone his position and aerodynamics. Mancho is a flat road TT specialist and has hit a run of Top Form in recent days. This will make him a menacing opponent at the Monte Petrano ITT and the Rio Grande prologue at the Volta da Lagoa dos Patos in Brazil.
The two complexities are the tight turnarounds with just 36 hours between the two races and the hills at Monte Petrano where Mancho is a more unknown quantity. Nevertheless, Verme remains an exciting prospect for a result at one of the two races.
